Modern data centers often face high harmonic distortion due to the use of UPS power systems, variable frequency drives, and energy-saving devices, which exceed national standards. Sources of Harmonics

Main harmonic sources include UPS systems, variable frequency drives, and LED lights. UPS generates 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th harmonics. Energy-saving lamps primarily generate 3rd harmonics.

Key Issues

  • Weak voltage and signal systems are prone to harmonic interference, causing system malfunctions or data loss.
  • 3rd harmonics can overload the neutral line, leading to overheating and fire hazards.
  • Harmonics can cause circuit breakers to trip, disrupting operations, and affecting UPS performance.

Solutions

iKonMac’s AHF effectively mitigate 2nd to 50th harmonics, with over 95% removal of lower-order harmonics (up to the 13th). This ensures enhanced power quality and operational safety in data centers.

Harmonic Filter Project

Project Overview

The China Unicom South China (Dongguan) Data Center, located in Dongguan Songshan Lake High-Tech Zone, is built to international T3+ standards. It covers 91.8 acres with a total area of 131,900 sqm, including an IDC building, power center, water reservoir, call center, R&D center, and training facility.

Analysis and Solution

UPS systems, lighting, and variable frequency air conditioners generate significant 11th and 13th harmonics, affecting power safety and communication equipment. To resolve this, 16 AHF-200A filters (3200A) were installed, operational since June 2016.

Module Performance

Harmonic distortion was reduced from 17% to 5%, improving power quality, reducing line losses, and ensuring stable equipment operation, earning positive feedback from the client.

China Mobile Data Center
Harmonic Mitigation Project

Project Overview

China Mobile (Suzhou) Data Center is a key facility supporting 5G, cloud services, and big data. Located in Suzhou, it uses advanced technology for efficient data processing, storage, and disaster recovery, serving both domestic and international clients.

Analysis and Solution

Main harmonic sources include UPS systems, lighting, and variable frequency air conditioners, generating 11th and 13th harmonics, affecting power safety and communication. The project used 350k SVG compensators for reactive power and harmonic mitigation, with 2 iKonMac-SVG-200k units, operational since January 2023.

Module Performance

The solution achieved a 34.1% reduction in harmonic distortion, with a voltage THD of 3.6%. The improved power quality has been well received by the management and professionals involved.

DaJia Insurance Group
Reactive Power Compensation

Project Overview

Dajia Insurance Group needs to relocate equipment and systems from Guofurui Data Center in Beijing, Dr. Peng Data Center, and the A and B Data Center buildings of the group headquarters to the Sanhe Yanjiao Data Center in Hebei.

Analysis and Solution

To reduce costs, Dajia relocated equipment from multiple data centers to the Yanjiao Data Center in Hebei. The project installed iKonMac’s SVG 350k to mitigate harmonics and improve power quality

Module Performance

Increasing the power factor from 0.92 to 0.99. The system has been operational since July 2022.
