Power Quality Solution for Airport Industry

Industry Overview
As society continues to develop, power electronic technology has also advanced, leading to increased challenges with harmonic distortion in civil aviation airport power systems. The sources of harmonics in these systems are diverse, primarily generated by loads such as lighting systems, transit systems, and baggage handling systems.
Power Quality Issues
Airports’ main power loads are lighting, and harmonics in their power systems come from various sources. These include lighting systems like fluorescent lamps and LED energy-saving lights (single-phase loads), variable speed drives (e.g., air conditioners), which mainly produce 3rd-order harmonics, and trains (AC to DC conversion for traction), generating 5th and 7th-order harmonics. Baggage handling systems, with many electric motors, also produce significant 5th and 7th-order harmonics. Harmonic current distortion in airport power distribution systems typically ranges from 20-40%.
Power Quality Challenges
A large number of harmonic loads in airport lighting systems cause significant 3rd-order harmonics. Due to the alignment of 3rd-order harmonic currents, the neutral line current can exceed twice the phase current, leading to overheating, accelerated aging of the protective rubber, and potential fire hazards.
Harmonics from the transit and baggage handling systems can also cause overheating, vibrations, noise, and insulation degradation in electrical equipment, reducing equipment lifespan and possibly leading to failures or burnout.
Solution
IKonMac’s Active Harmonic Filter can address 2nd to 50th-order harmonics. The primary harmonics generated in civil aviation airports are the 3rd, 5th, and 7th orders. The IKM-AHF series active power filters effectively address these harmonic issues and can also help adjust three-phase current imbalances, thus improving the overall energy quality of the system and ensuring safe power usage.
