Power Quality Solution for Data Center Industry

Ikonmac’s power quality solutions implemented in a data center environment

Industry Overview

Modern data centers often face high harmonic distortion due to UPS power supplies and variable frequency devices, exceeding national standards. This harsh harmonic environment can cause program errors, data corruption, system crashes, and even equipment damage, leading to significant operational losses.

Power Quality Issues

The primary sources of harmonic pollution in data centers are UPS power supplies, variable frequency devices, LED energy-saving lights, and other nonlinear loads.

  1. Variable frequency devices generate harmonics during rectification and inversion, with the 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th harmonics being common in 6-pulse rectification circuits.
  2. UPS systems rectify AC to DC and invert it back to AC. A 6-pulse UPS typically generates the 5th and 7th harmonics, while a 12-pulse UPS produces the 11th and 13th harmonics.
  3. Energy-saving lamps, with their electronic ballasts, convert 50Hz power to around 38kHz, creating nonlinear currents that produce the 3rd harmonic.

Power Quality Challenges

Weak electrical systems like information, data, communication, and monitoring systems are highly sensitive to harmonics, leading to system crashes, control malfunctions, downtime, and potential loss of real-time data.

Data center loads generate significant 3rd harmonics, which are zero-sequence harmonics. These harmonics accumulate on the neutral (N) line, causing excessive current that can overheat, melt, and trigger fires.

Harmonic interference can cause circuit breakers in distribution equipment to trip, leading to power outages and disrupting operations. While UPS backup exists, it may not meet demands due to harmonic interference, resulting in losses.

Solution

The IKM-Active Harmonic Filter series can mitigate harmonics from the 2nd to the 50th order. The harmonics generated in the data center industry are primarily the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th harmonics. The use of IKM-AHF series can effectively address harmonic issues, significantly improve the system’s power quality, and ensure the safety of user power consumption.
