Industry Overview

        The medical industry, particularly hospitals, has seen significant advancements with the widespread use of electronic medical equipment. However, these devices often generate substantial harmonic distortion, which distorts voltage and current waveforms, affecting power supply quality. This can damage electrical systems, shorten equipment lifespan, interfere with critical medical devices, and compromise patient and staff safety. 

Power Quality Issues

        Hospital power systems supply electricity to medical equipment, lighting, ventilation, computers, and UPS systems. Harmonics primarily come from switching power supplies, electronic ballasts, frequency converters, and rectifiers. Switching power supplies generate 3rd, 5th, and 7th harmonics, while electronic ballasts in lighting produce 3rd-order zero-sequence harmonics. Frequency converters and rectifiers in ventilation and UPS systems generate 5th, 7th, and 11th harmonics. Harmonic distortion in the medical industry typically ranges from 15% to 25%.

Power Quality Challenges

        Harmonics-induced voltage fluctuations can affect medical instruments, causing performance issues and inaccurate readings. Power disruptions and grid disturbances pose significant risks to hospitals. Many devices struggle in harmonic-rich environments, which can reduce their lifespan. 3rd-order harmonics accumulate on the neutral line, raising current levels, overheating cables, and potentially causing fires.
