Power Quality Solution for Petrochemical Industry

Ikonmac’s power quality solutions implemented in a petrochemical facility

Industry Overview

The chemical industry holds an important position in the national economies of many countries, acting as a fundamental and pillar industry. The speed and scale of the development of the chemical industry directly impact various sectors of the economy, with global chemical product output exceeding $1.5 trillion annually.

The chemical industry is divided into three main categories: petrochemicals, basic chemicals, and chemical fibers. The basic chemical category is further subdivided into nine subcategories: fertilizers, organic chemicals, inorganic chemicals, chlor-alkali products, fine and specialty chemicals, pesticides, daily chemicals, plastic products, and rubber products.

Power Quality Issues

The chemical industry uses a large number of pump loads, many of which are equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs). These VFDs typically use an AC-DC-AC structure, which converts the 50Hz power supply into varying frequency AC to enable variable-speed operation of motors. The widespread use of VFDs significantly increases the harmonic content in the power distribution system. Besides VFDs, other major loads in the chemical industry include fans, large electric motors, high-power electrical drive equipment, DC output devices, chemical rectifiers, and UPS power supplies.

Power Quality Challenges

•  High load start-up surges and low power factor (between 0.7 and 0.8), resulting in penalties.

•  Harmonic current distortion rates ranging from 10% to 30%, primarily involving the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th harmonics, creating potential safety hazards.

Solution

In chemical plants with a large number of inverters and significant harmonic distortion, it is recommended to use the iKonMac's Active Harmonic Filter for harmonic mitigation, along with the iKonMac's Static Var Generator for reactive power compensation to improve the power factor. The combination of AHF and SVG offers a comprehensive solution for improving power quality.

For chemical plants with fewer inverters and lower harmonic levels, it is recommended to use the Static Var Generator, which not only compensates reactive power and improves power factor but also provides harmonic compensation for the 2nd to 13th orders, thereby comprehensively enhancing the system’s power quality.
