Power Quality Issues
Pharmaceutical enterprises have a large number of pumps and motor loads, many of which are equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs). The widespread use of VFDs significantly increases harmonic content in the power distribution system. Most VFDs use six-pulse rectifiers to convert AC to DC, generating harmonics primarily of the 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th orders. The harmonic current distortion rate is typically over 30%, indicating a high level of harmonic distortion.
Power Quality Challenges
Pharmaceutical enterprises typically have laboratories and automated production lines with numerous precision instruments. In many cases, these devices are both sources and victims of harmonics. Harmonics can disrupt laboratory equipment, leading to failed experiments, and interfere with intelligent controllers and PLC systems in automated production lines, causing malfunctions. Many national laboratories and pharmaceutical production lines have experienced equipment failures due to harmonic disturbances.
