Industry Overview

        Installing photovoltaic (PV) power systems on unused factory rooftops helps businesses reduce energy costs, use idle resources, and contribute to sustainability goals. Surplus power can also be sold back to the grid for extra income. However, PV systems can lower the power factor and generate harmonics, affecting power quality and safety. Power Quality Issues

        Photovoltaic (PV) systems can reduce the power factor of the supply system by supplying active power to the load, which decreases the transformer’s active power output. This can lead to non-compliance with power company standards. Large PV systems may also cause overcompensation of the power factor. The inverter, a key component, is a common source of harmonics, mainly the 5th and 7th, with distortion rates of 5-20%.

Power Quality Challenges

        After installing PV systems, the power factor decreases, and the output of the PV system fluctuates frequently. Traditional capacitor compensation is slow and insufficient, leading to power company penalties and higher electricity costs. Additionally, the harmonics generated by the PV inverters create safety risks in the grid. Therefore, it’s necessary to install filtering devices to manage these issues effectively.

Solution

        Although the harmonics generated by PV systems are small, they significantly reduce the system’s power factor. The solution focuses on compensating for reactive power, while also addressing harmonics. The IKM-SVG series Static Var Generator from iKonMac can compensate for the system’s reactive power and improve the power factor to 0.99. It also filters harmonics from the 2nd to the 25th order, removing 90% of the harmonics. This solution effectively solves the power quality problems caused by photovoltaic systems.
