Industry Overview

        Steel enterprises have high electricity demands, with characteristics such as large capacity, significant load shocks, frequent starting and braking, high-speed operations, and high automation. The operation of equipment like rolling mills, electric welding machines, and electric arc furnaces can cause reactive power fluctuations, low power factor, three-phase imbalance, and excessive harmonics. These issues can distort grid voltage and cause resonance at certain frequencies. iKonMac Technology offers professional power quality solutions to address these challenges, ensuring a green, safe, and stable electricity environment in the steel industry.

Power Quality Issues

        Steel enterprises use a large number of DC motors, converter drives, AC motors with frequency control, and power electronic devices, all of which are nonlinear loads. These problems seriously threaten the safe operation of the power system and the safe and efficient functioning of electrical equipment.

Power Quality Challenges

  • Rolling Mills:

        The drive systems of rolling mills generate harmful characteristic subharmonics, primarily odd harmonics such as 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th. Frequent starts also lead to a reduced power factor. Due to the skin effect and proximity effect of harmonics, this causes heating of cables, increased transformer noise, and higher losses. Harmonics may also trigger issues such as oxygen production equipment tripping, switch misoperation, motor burnout, frequency converter trips, protection device malfunctions, and generator rotor overheating.

  • Electric Arc Furnace:

        The operation of electric arc furnaces causes voltage fluctuations and flicker, with significant reactive power changes. This leads to a reduced power factor and three-phase imbalance, while generating a large amount of harmonics, mainly the 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th. These harmonics can induce torsional oscillations in nearby large units and cause voltage fluctuations in the power system grid.

Solution

        iKonMac's Ultra Active Harmonic Filter can mitigate both THDi and THDv, harmonics from 2-50th order. The Static Var Generator are ideal for complex reactive power compensation scenarios, effectively compensating reactive power and balancing three-phase currents. With a response time of less than 10ms, these solutions significantly improve system power quality and ensure the safety of the user’s electricity supply.
