Power Quality Solution for Metallurgy Industry

Ikonmac’s power quality solutions implemented in a metallurgy facility

Industry Overview

Metallurgical operations often struggle with issues like high reactive power impact, low power factor, and significant harmonic distortion. Common equipment in the industry includes induction furnaces, electric arc furnaces, and rolling mills, all of which generate substantial harmonic currents. These harmonics distort the voltage and current waveforms in the power grid, compromising power supply quality and potentially harming other electrical equipment. iKonMac offers specialized harmonic filtering solutions that efficiently address these power quality challenges, creating a greener, safer, and more stable power environment for metallurgical facilities.

Power Quality Issues

  • Induction Furnaces & Rolling Mills

These systems typically use 6-pulse or 12-pulse converters. 6-pulse systems primarily generate 5th, 7th, 11th, and 13th-order harmonics. 12-pulse systems mainly generate 11th and 13th-order harmonics.

  • Electric Arc Furnaces

These generate large amounts of harmonic currents while also exhibiting three-phase imbalance and asymmetry. The main harmonics include third-order and its multiples, along with some even-order harmonics.

Power Quality Challenges

Metallurgical loads fluctuate rapidly, with frequent startups and shutdowns of induction furnaces, rolling mills, and electric arc furnaces. This leads to: Low power factor, resulting in penalties for excessive reactive power consumption. Voltage and current waveform distortion, increasing power losses in the distribution network. Deterioration of power quality, which directly affects the reliability and safety of electrical equipment.

Solution

IKM-AHF Series Active Harmonic Filters capable of filtering 2nd to 50th-order harmonics. Achieves a harmonic filtering efficiency of over 95%.

IKM-SVG Series Static var Generators designed for dynamic reactive power compensation in complex environments. Fast response time of less than 10ms for real-time power quality improvement. Effectively enhances power quality and ensures safe electricity usage for industrial operations.
