Power Quality Solution for School Industry

Industry Overview
With the introduction of modern teaching methods like electronic libraries and improvements in facilities such as intelligent water systems, variable frequency air conditioning, and energy-efficient lighting, the school’s load now includes more nonlinear devices. These devices cause power quality issues, including harmonic pollution, increased reactive power, and three-phase imbalances, which negatively affect the distribution system. Managing harmonics can enhance system stability, extend the lifespan of equipment, reduce failure rates, and minimize safety risks.
Power Quality Issues
The school’s primary load is lighting, with most fixtures using fluorescent lights that generate significant 3rd-order harmonics. Additionally, heavy use of air conditioning and elevators, which are equipped with variable frequency devices, produces substantial 5th and 7th-order harmonics. The school also has an information center and multimedia center, where computers and UPS power supplies generate considerable 3rd, 5th, and 7th-order harmonics. Moreover, the experimental buildings, housing various equipment with nonlinear components, primarily generate low-order harmonics, particularly the 5th and 7th orders.
Power Quality Challenges
Power grid harmonics degrade the school’s electrical quality, affecting supply reliability and potentially causing outages. Harmonic currents increase load current, occupy transformer capacity, and reduce system efficiency. They also raise transformer and transmission line temperatures, shortening equipment lifespan and creating fire risks. Given the school’s high population density, the demand for power quality and safety is critical. Therefore, harmonics in the distribution system must be promptly addressed and mitigated.
Solution
The harmonics in the school mainly consist of low-order harmonics such as the 3rd, 5th, and 7th orders, with relatively small load currents and harmonic values. The IKM-SVG series Static Var Generator (SVG) can compensate for reactive power, balance three-phase currents, and mitigate harmonics from the 2nd to the 25th orders, significantly improving the power quality of the school’s distribution system.
For teaching buildings and dormitories, a centralized mitigation solution can be implemented by adding SVGs to the main power lines for compensation and filtering. In laboratory buildings, libraries, and information centers, small-capacity SVGs can be installed in distribution boxes on each floor for localized compensation and harmonic mitigation.
