Industry Overview

        Under the “11th Five-Year Plan” that fully promotes “energy conservation and emission reduction,” automotive and shipbuilding manufacturing companies increasingly require energy-saving solutions. While energy-saving equipment is widely applied in distribution systems, it also generates a large amount of harmonic pollution, leading to energy losses and safety risks. 

Power Quality Issues

        The primary sources of electrical harmonic pollution in the automotive and shipbuilding manufacturing industries come from spot welders, DC motors, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).

• Spot Welders: These are typical single-phase impulse loads and harmonic power sources. Due to the two-phase short-circuit principle used in the welding machine, large current imbalances occur. The current harmonic distortion rate typically ranges from 10-30%, with harmonic frequencies primarily at the 5th to 13th orders.

• DC Motors: These are typical sources of harmonics and impulse loads. Harmonic current constitutes about 30% of the total current of the equipment, and harmonic frequencies vary with the load on the system, typically occurring at the 5th to 7th orders.

• Variable Frequency Drives: These circuits are generally composed of rectifiers, intermediate DC stages, inverters, and controllers. The current distortion rate typically ranges from 30-50%, with harmonic frequencies primarily at the 5th to 7th orders.

Power Quality Challenges

• Harmonic currents degrade welding quality, causing defects like false welds, missed welds, and inaccuracies, leading to substandard products.

• In painting workshops, harmonics increase equipment losses, disrupting coating, transport, and sanding processes, resulting in uneven coating, bubbles, missed areas, and rework.

• Harmonics cause PLC and microcontroller malfunctions due to zero-crossing voltage anomalies, impacting control accuracy and power electronics operation.

Solution

        IKonMac's Active Harmonic Filter can manage harmonics from the 2nd to the 50th order. Harmonics in automotive and shipbuilding manufacturing are primarily in the 5th and 7th orders.

        By applying the IKM-AHF series active filters, harmonic issues and three-phase current imbalances in the industry can be effectively addressed, significantly improving the overall system power quality and ensuring the safety of electricity usage for the user.
